Title: A Glimpse of New Ancient Sites in Haiyuan
News Summary
In the fourth national cultural‑heritage survey, Haiyuan County of Zhongwei City, Ningxia, identified 114 newly discovered immovable cultural relics. This accounts for more than one‑tenth of all new finds in Ningxia (1,041 sites). After expert review, these sites span many periods—Old Stone Age, New Stone Age, the Sui‑Tang era, and the Western Xia dynasty. They include archaeological sites, rock paintings, stone caves, as well as sections of the Great Wall such as enemy towers, beacon towers, and ancient forts.
The most significant find is the Oil‑Fang Courtyard Old Stone Age site, dating back about 22,000 years. Excavations uncovered burned bone, ash, a hearth and many tiny stone tools. These materials provide fresh information and research potential for understanding the environment, culture, and human interactions in northern China during the Late Pleistocene. Haiyuan has long been a key route linking the Central Plains with the Western Regions, where multiple civilizations have mingled. The sites from different eras shine like a cluster of stars, revealing a richly layered history.
Reflection and Inspiration
These discoveries remind us that the past is not distant; the marks on the land are the continuation of the labor and lives of those who came before. Guarding our heritage is both a sign of respect for history and a way to leave roots for the next generation. Like caring for a home, it requires patience, integrity, and daily watchfulness.
In ordinary work and neighborly help we are also building a common life. Sometimes we must rely on our own hard work; other times we must acknowledge our limits and depend on the Lord’s protection and care, so that people and memories can be passed on safely.
Scripture
Psalm 127:1 – “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain; unless the Lord watches over the city, those who guard it stand watch in vain.”
